Infrastructure investment refers to the development of global frameworks to inform a more coordinated and collaborative approach to the delivery of relevant, timely and affordable evidence syntheses. Infrastructure elements are reflected in the proposed work streams including: demand side engagement, data sharing and reusing, responsible use of AI, methods and process innovation and capacity sharing. Why is this funding for synthesis only? What about support for guidelines and implementation, which are critical to the success of synthesis initiatives? This funding round is only the first step. It is anticipated that other parts of the evidence ecosystem will be engaged in future, although it is important to acknowledge that the inclusion of demand side engagement in this first stage is critical to supporting implementation initiatives. We recognise that non-health segments of the synthesis community are smaller but we want to ensure an inclusive approach across all working and planning groups. With so many potential people/partners involved how will we prevent an administrative nightmare and very lengthy discussions [that potentially delay decisions from being made]? We are hoping that this initiative will be modeled on principles of collaborative governance, whereby we build readiness, develop foundations and then scale for impact. An important part of this will be the working and planning groups and we understand the need to balance ‘discourse’ and ‘decisions’. Hopefully this can be achieved through regular meeting touch points and reporting so that we keep making progress, but do so in an inclusive, equitable and meaningful way.
